This 12 acre Waterfront Park has been deemed the most significant publically open space in
San Diego’s world-renowned harbor and is also billed as the largest San Diego urban park since
the Panama-California Exposition built in 1915. San Diego has identified this park as the
quintessential destination for residents, visitors and tourists. The historic San Diego
Administration Center - built in 1938 - is the centerpiece of this park and for many decades
was surrounded by asphalt parking lots constantly filled with automobiles. The creation of this
park came to fruition when the county decided to eliminate all surface parking by adding a
new subterranean parking structure. What was once a sea of cars is now a park with an 850
foot long by 40 foot wide interactive fountain, a large civic green space, areas with intimate
garden rooms, a children’s play zone and various picnic areas. Marne Construction
constructed the entire concrete fountain structure and closely collaborated with the other
contractors responsible for the fountain mechanical systems and adjacent underground
parking structure.
